Barbie Sweatshops — Thailand, Thailand
The article i read about Barbie Sweatshops particularly in Thailand made me feel pretty sad. To start off, I think multinational corporations such as Mattel, subcontract other companies to manufacture their products for one main reason. The reason is that it saves companies money by having others do what they need done at cheaper costs. The reason why they don't just open up a Mattel factory is because it would cost them greater amounts of money, which in return would reduce their profits. In developing nations like Thailand, workers rights and protections are considered weak or even "non-existent" for a few reasons. First, most of the workers happen to be young girls around the ages of 12-15 and they don't have much say in what happens because they are so young. Also part of the problem is that most countries such as the United States aren't aware of what really takes place in countries like Thailand in terms of working conditions and other aspects of the work atmosphere. Lastly, a company like Mattel cares more about their Barbie products than the actual employee themsleves because their goal as a company is to make as much profit as they can without paying a decent amount of money for people's hard labor.
